Syracuse Habitat for Humanity

About Syracuse Habitat
visit the site for greater details.

“The year 2012 will mark the 28th anniversary of Syracuse Habitat for Humanity, Inc., a Christian ecumenical ministry affiliated with Habitat for Humanity, International. The organization emphasizes affordable housing through a variety of advocacy programs, but is best known for building or renovating non-profit houses in partnership with selected low-income families. In Syracuse, about 65 homes have been, or soon will be, completed and ready for occupancy. Most of the recently built homes are located in the Near Westside area of Syracuse. Each Habitat family is expected to contribute a minimum number of sweat-hours to the construction of their home. A small down payment is also required. Twenty-year, interest-free, mortgages are held by Syracuse Habitat.

”Habitat for Humanity’s creed is to work in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow into all that God intended. Habitat creates partnerships within the community by crossing racial, cultural, political and economic barriers and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion , sex, family status or disability.

“Volunteers for a variety of work including house construction, family nurturing, fund-raising, in-office, de-construction, the Re-Store to name a few are always needed. Phone: Syracuse Habitat for Humanity, 422-2230 at 308 Oak St., Syracuse, NY 13204.”

S.W.E.A.T. for HABITAT news

“It’s been a bit quiet over the summer – at least for S.W.E.A.T. for HABITAT. However, things are beginning to move again. Work on the first of several scheduled tool sheds was started Friday, September 24th under the coordination of our volunteer construction supervisor, Tom Hillring. Volunteers also worked Saturday, September 25th and will continue on Thursday, September 29th and Friday, September 30th. Other dates are to be announced.

”S.W.E.A.T. for HABIT is a group of volunteers who raise the funds and also construct tool sheds for all completed Syracuse Habitat houses which do not have basements. The main fund-raiser is an annual bowl-a-thon. This coming year’s 11th Annual S.W.E.A.T. for HABITAT Youth/Adult Bowl-A-Thon is scheduled for Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 12:30-3:00 p.m. at the Bowl Mor lanes in East Syracuse. Advance registration is requested. Teams consist of 4 to 6 bowlers with a minimum of $50.00 in sponsor support per bowler if possible, although not required. A bowling fee of $5.50 is also charged per participant which includes two games and shoe rental. In the past the bowlers have represented various churches, community organizations, unions, families and businesses.

”As their names are drawn, each of some 100 participants in the Bowl-A-Thon may choose a modest door prize from a large selection. Donations for the door prize table are currently being sought.

”In 2011 the Bowl-A-Thon was just forty-four dollars shy of raising $6.000.

”The location for the tool shed builds has recently changed. Previously S.W.E.A.T. worked in the Otisco St. warehouse/office building of Syracuse Habitat. But now that building is over-flowing with construction materials and items for sale in the Re-Store. So, recently workspace was set up for S.W.E.A.T. to work in a nearby building at the corner of Van Renssalaer and Hiawatha. In connection with the change of location, S.W.E.A.T. members agreed to purchase a new Porter Cable Shop Saw and an air-hammer for the facility at the cost of $500.

“S.W.E.A.T. for HABITAT works under the auspices of Syracuse Habitat for Humanity which now has four homes nearing completion. These will bring the total number in this community to about 65. Two homes currently are being built for veterans, a third is called the ‘Women Build” house and the fourth is a Syracuse University student sponsored house. A fifth house, with Interfaith sponsorship, will be built on Gifford St. but is still in the fund-raising stage. Syracuse Habitat is seeking churches and others to join in with sponsorships. S.W.E.A.T. for HABITAT is holding funds raised in past Bowl-A-Thons for this house, awaiting the time construction gets underway. S.W.E.A.T. will be able to make a substantial contribution.

“For more information on the tool shed builds, the Bowl-A-Thon or the Interfaith house, phone Syracuse Habitat at 422-2230. You will be advised of names of volunteers who can assist you or for S.W.E.A.T. activities specifically you may call the Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church at 492-2692.”
