Readings: Psalm 104.3-4, 24-30
Synopsis: Earth, Wind, Water and Fire (No, not the Band Earth, Wind and Fire)
This series will pick up on themes used in the devotional guide I put together for my sabbatical and inspiration comes from Christine Valters Paintner’s book, Water, Wind Earth and Fire, The Christian Practice of Praying the Elements. Focusing on the Psalms, that especially refers to elements to describe attributes of God, you can anticipate some new and creative ways to think about, pray with and worship God in this short series.
~ Recall a time when you experienced deep suffering. What were the ways God continued to be present to you through that time? Was there a friend who listened well? A loyal companion animal who comforted you? A sacred place that offered you solace?
~ When life becomes too difficult, are you able to bring your own sorrow and pain to God in conversation? What keeps you from bringing the whole of yourself before God?
~ Are you a more apt to come to God in sorrow asking for relief rather than seeking to understand what lessons the experience might hold? How might you embrace the gifts hidden in suffering rather than trying to banish it?
