That little conjunction but negates everything that comes before it! When Jesus uses the word BUT here in the sermon on the mount, it is meant to FULFILL what comes before it…(see Matthew 5.17-18) WHICH MEANS…Jesus overturns our commonly held beliefs about what is right and what is wrong and calls us to a more demanding way, a way closer to the will of God
